The UK is building an ultra-powerful supercomputer with artificial intelligence – with 200 quadrillion calculations per second

The UK government is investing $273 million to build the Isambard-AI supercomputer, which, once turned on, should be one of the best artificial intelligence supercomputers in the world.

Isambard-AI will be equipped with 5,448 NVIDIA GH200 Grace Hoppe superchips, allowing it to perform more than 200 quadrillion calculations per second. The British supercomputer is expected to start operating in the summer of 2024, and will be hosted by the University of Bristol.

According to the university, Isambard-AI will be 10 times faster than the UK's fastest supercomputer in existence today. Although, eventually it will connect to other devices to further improve performance.

American IT giant Hewlett Packard Enterprise will help build the computer with the goal of subsequently connecting it to the recently announced Cambridge supercomputer called Dawn. The device, created by Dell and StackPC, will be powered by more than 1,000 Intel chips that use water cooling to reduce power consumption. It is expected to be operational in the next two months.

The UK hopes the two combined supercomputers will achieve breakthroughs in fusion energy, healthcare and climate modelling.

The UK government previously committed £1 billion to invest in the semiconductor industry to secure the country's chip supply and reduce its dependence on East Asia for the most commercially important chips.
