We are talking about the long-idle GM site, where Opel cars were once produced
Chairman of the Committee on Industrial Policy, Innovation and Trade of St. Petersburg Kirill Soloveichik, speaking at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum, announced that it is planned to start producing new car models at the former Russian Hyundai plant. < /p>
«Negotiations are underway with the company «Art-Finance», which bought the assets of Hyundai. These same assets included the General Motors site. Negotiations are underway to restore production. There were different options, but colleagues intend to develop production», — told by Kirill Soloveichik.
Recall that the production of cars at the GM plant in Shushary began in 2008. The company produced Chevrolet Captiva and Opel Antara crossovers, as well as Chevrolet Lacetti and Chevrolet Cruze sedans. After General Motors left Russia, the plant stood idle for five years — until 2020, when it was bought by Hyundai. The company planned to launch production of the Hyundai Tucson and Kia Sportage, popular in Russia, as well as the Hyundai Palisade. But after the events of 2022, Hyundai itself left Russia, and the Hyundai plant, which included the former GM enterprise, went to the company «Art-Finance».
It is not reported which cars will be assembled at the GM site, but we are probably talking about some Chinese brand: given the sanctions, there are no other options.
