A new direction will be developed in Russia – radiophotonics

This technology will allow transmitting large amounts of information at very high speeds

According to the state corporation «Rostec», on the basis of the Research Institute «Polyus» holding «Shvabe» a new technological direction will be created: the institute will carry out scientific activities on the development of radiophotonics. This will allow large-scale research and the use of the latest developments to create radio-photonic systems in wireless and satellite networks, laser rangefinders, antennas at airfields, radars and gyroscopes. In the future, the development of radio photonics will make it possible to transmit very large volumes of information at ultra-high speeds – significantly faster than now. 

Devices created on the basis of radio photonics technologies will differ from existing analogues in speed, accuracy, high level of noise immunity and a number of other advantages. We plan to involve our partners in this work – scientists in the field of laser technologies, designers, engineers and other specialists from Rostec enterprises.

Currently, research workers at the Research Institute «Polyus» Together with colleagues from the National Research Nuclear University MEPhI, they are developing modulators based on heterostructures on an indium phosphide substrate. This semiconductor material, operating in the 1500-1600 nm range, can be used to create photonic integrated circuits used in fiber optic and telecommunications systems.
