Kyivstar, which is still under threat of nationalization or partial confiscation, began to introduce the sensational GPON, notifying about this event with a small press release, which we almost missed: on December 6, the largest operator connected the first subscribers to the optical Internet in city of New Division, Lviv region.

If you suddenly missed the previous news regarding GPON and the recent dispute between the Ministry of Digital Development and InAU for the best home Internet in conditions of blackouts (1 and 2), the technology of passive optical networks itself is by no means new, but the massive attacks on the energy infrastructure of Ukraine by the Russians drones and missiles sparked interest. significantly accelerated the deployment of these networks by Ukrainian Internet providers. Among the leaders in terms of the pace of transition and implementation of xPON, if we talk about the largest Internet providers, are Ukrtelecom, Vodafone Ukraine, which previously absorbed Freenet (O3) and Vega, as well as Lanet. But Kyivstar is an outsider, since it delayed the transition to GPON until the very end, preferring to modernize existing networks with uninterruptible power systems (UPS), which provide a few more hours of Internet when the power is turned off, provided that all related equipment is provided with autonomous power supply.

In the summer, the company announced the start of building its “Home Internet” network using GPON in the fourth quarter of 2023. And this day has finally come.

Kyivstar Home Internet using GPON technology – what are the conditions and how to connect

To connect to the optical home Internet, you will need a special ONU terminal that converts the optical fiber signal into an electrical signal, and vice versa. There is currently a 2-in-1 solution on the market (Wi-Fi router + ONU). If desired, the subscriber can buy the terminal himself, and upon connection, Kyivstar specialists will set up everything. When connecting to optical Internet until March 31, 2024, Kyivstar will provide ONU terminals to subscribers free of charge. This is a temporary promotion.

Like optical Internet from any other provider, Home Internet from Kyivstar will continue to work when the house is de-energized; you just need to power up the ONU terminal and router using a power bank, charging station, uninterruptible power supply or other available power sources.

The main and only condition for connecting to Home Internet from Kyivstar using GPON technology is the availability of coverage and equipment in the house. And so far the company is not doing well with this: since December 6, Kyivstar has been connecting subscribers to optics only in the only city of Novy Rozdol. The plans include scaling high-speed Home Internet using GPON technology to another 7 cities (which ones are not specified) until the end of March 2024.
