In response to some negative feedback in the preview, the director of Star Wars Outlaws stated that the demo was just an appetizer.
Although reactions to the reveal varied, many in the press who played the game drew comparisons between the gameplay of Star Wars Outlaws and Naughty Dog's Uncharted series. Some were complimentary, others said the gameplay was old-fashioned and too similar to Sony's action-adventure franchise.
When asked about the backlash in an interview after the Ubisoft Forward presentation, Star Wars Outlaws creative director Julian Gerighty responded that he had not yet had a chance to follow the recently published previews. He praised comparisons to Naughty Dog's work, saying that only a small portion of what Star Wars Outlaws had to offer was available to the public.
“ For me, this is not necessarily our benchmark,” he said about the Uncharted series. Naughty Dog and what they do is great, so I accept that, but that wasn't the goal.”
Geraiti described the demo presented at Summer Game Fest as an appetizer for what's to come in Massive Entertainment's open-world game.
“We'll spend a lot more time on these things, because they're the appetizer, not the main course of the game. I think overall we have a very interesting game, and this is just part of it.”
Star War Outlaws will be released on August 30, 2024 on PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
