The government's attempt to attract citizens to use AI without resorting to disapproved foreign analogues
The China Cyberspace Research Institute, operating under the Cyberspace Administration of China, launched an LLM model (Large Language Model) focused on political philosophy of Xi Jinping.
This effort aims to encourage Chinese people to use artificial intelligence without resorting to foreign models such as ChatGPT.
The closed AI system fully reflects the official position of the government based on Xi Jinping's Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era. This philosophy, which became part of China's constitution in 2018, is deeply rooted in Chinese culture and is taught even by schoolchildren.
According to the WeChat administration, this LLM is described as being able to meet «a wide range of user needs» and can answer questions, write reports, summarize information, and translate between Chinese and English. The system is hosted on the servers of the China Cyberspace Research Institute, where «all data is processed locally, ensuring a high level of security».
The model is not yet available to the general public, as it is in the testing stage, but some users were invited to try it out.
Other Chinese tech companies such as Baidu and Alibaba have also developed their own generative AI chatbots, but any content they generate about the president is strictly controlled.
In light of this, the China Cyber Security Association has published a publicly available database containing 100 million records that can be used to train models.
