It seems that this time Neil Druckmann received an undeserved “fling” from the gaming community and industry colleagues
An interview with Neil Druckmann recently appeared. It looked as if an ambitious creator was threatening to rethink the generally accepted ideas about gaming. This led to criticism online as it was considered “braggadocious.”
The story continued with an unexpected twist – it turned out that Neil Druckmann didn’t say anything like that. During the editing process of the interview, Sony made specific edits that created the wrong impression of what was said.
So Neil Druckmann decided to publish the full version of the answer to the question about the “dream project”; he only mentioned that for him personally this project looks unique and exciting (not for the entire industry).
Also, thanks to this developer’s publication, we managed to learn something else. Druckmann thinks that video games should not be turned into similar films or TV series; film adaptations only help to draw attention to the original source (video game):
“I wanted [The Last of Us series] to be good so bad because I wanted someone to watch the show and really like it. And so that they fall in love with these characters the way we once fell in love with this story and characters. And at the end [the viewer] will realize, “Wait, this is based on a video game?,” and then go and see what happens in video games. So now I feel like there's a lot of focus on gaming.
And you know, the Fallout [TV series] just came out. And this is a big success for Amazon. I find this really exciting. It's not because games should [become] movies or TV shows – I think it's just opening the eyes of a lot of people who just weren't aware of the kinds of experiences that can be had in games, and I think we've reached a tipping point now. when people are about to realize, “Oh my god, games have this whole incredible 'cinematic experience'!” ~p>
