OLED displays for both Apple's next-generation iPad Pro models are starting to be produced at the facilities of Samsung Display and LG Display, they should be in time to sell finished tablets in April.

According to Korean publication The Elec, LG Display recently began thin-film transistor (TFT) production for the new 13-inch iPad Pro displays, while Samsung will launch its own TFT production for the new 11-inch iPad this week Pro.

The finished 11-inch and 13-inch iPad Pro OLED displays are expected to go into mass production around March in time for the planned April release, reports MacRumors. Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said he expects the new iPad Pro models to launch in the second quarter of 2024, which runs from April to June.

OLED displays will appear in the iPad line for the first time. Apple has them for the iPhone and Apple Watch, but larger OLED screens cost more. Compared to light emitting diodes (LEDs) or miniLEDs, OLEDs provide deeper blacks and brighter colors.

Apple's OLED iPad Pro shipment forecast for this year fell to 8 million units, down from the 10 million units forecast for 2024. Apple didn't release any new iPad models last year, so it will be interesting to see whether pent-up demand can offset the relatively low sales of Apple's overall product line. The displays are expected to be three times more expensive than those used in iPhones, which could lead to significantly higher prices for buyers.

Along with the new displays, the iPad Pro models are expected to feature Apple's M3 processor, which debuted in the new MacBook Pro models last year. The M3 is built on 3nm technology and should provide a noticeable improvement in graphics performance over the M2 chip currently found in the iPad Pro.
