The Finnish company Nokia announced the signing of a multi-year patent cross-licensing agreement with the Chinese smartphone manufacturer Vivo. It concerns, inter alia, Vivo’s use of 5G communication technology — Litigation on this issue has been ongoing since 2021. The new agreement resolves all mutual disagreements between the companies regarding each other's intellectual property.

Under the terms of the agreement, Vivo will pay Nokia royalties for the use of its patented developments, and will also pay legal costs that have accumulated during the consideration of the dispute. «The Agreement resolves all pending patent litigation between the parties in all jurisdictions. The terms of the agreement remain confidential by agreement of the parties», — indicated in the official Nokia message.

Nokia emphasizes that its patent portfolio is based on €150 billion worth of research conducted since 2000, with more than 6,000 developments dedicated to 5G networks alone. The company is ready to transfer its developments under fair licensing conditions, and the companies that receive them will be able to save on conducting their own research. Over the past 13 months, the Finnish company has concluded 6 such licensing agreements; besides Vivo, she managed to reach an agreement with Apple, Samsung, Oppo, Honor and Huawei.
