It’s too early to panic—humans are still cheaper to work than AI in the vast majority of scenarios. New MIT Study

But in the future the situation may change

Fears about artificial intelligence replacing humans in real jobs have long been on the minds of many workers.

However, researchers have found that only a small percentage of workers can be effectively replaced by technology. In other cases, people did the work more economically.

A study by Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) experts comes to an unequivocal verdict: artificial intelligence cannot replace most jobs right now in cost-effective ways.

In one of the first in-depth studies of AI systems replacing humans, researchers modeled the economic appeal of automating various tasks in the United States, focusing on jobs that use computer vision — for example, teachers and real estate appraisers. They found that only 23% of workers, when measured by their dollar wages, could be effectively replaced. Since AI-powered visual recognition is expensive to install and operate, it is cheaper for people today.

The study also found that the use of robots and AI is most favorable in industries such as retail and warehousing, as well as in the healthcare context.

But today only 3% of such tasks can be automated at minimal cost. According to researchers, this figure could rise to 40% by 2030 if data costs fall and accuracy improves.
