German police confiscate over $2 billion worth of bitcoins

As part of a case that stretches back to 2008-2013

German police conducted an operation in which they confiscated a record amount of cryptocurrency.

We are talking about 50,000 bitcoins, which currently exceeds the amount of 2 billion dollars, and this is a record for such transactions with cryptocurrency.

What’s interesting is that the operation is related to the actions of individuals that were committed more than 10 years ago, and then 50,000 bitcoins were worth nothing against the current price. The case reportedly involves two men, aged 37 and 40, suspected of running the German portal movie2k.to until May 2013 and spending their profits in the form of cryptocurrency.

This portal itself had nothing to do with cryptocurrency, just like the accusation. Apparently, the men are suspected of illegal commercial use of copyrighted works, that is, piracy. The same portal movie2k.to distributed more than 880,000 illegal copies of films and TV series between 2008 and 2013.
