Game Boy Theft Auto: Car thieves in Japan use an unusual theft device

Not only protection systems are constantly being improved, but also ways to bypass them. Japanese craftsmen surprised again

The development of technologies has a downside – attackers are also beginning to master them. Car thieves are active in Japan and use a remarkable device to commit crimes. Outwardly, it very much resembles a Game Boy (and is named accordingly), but still it is not a Nintendo console.

Such a “gangster” Game Boy costs about 30 thousand dollars and ( it seems) it appeared in early 2024.

This is something like a “key emulator” that allows attackers to bypass car security systems.

The sellers themselves explain that this Game Boy is intended for backing up information in case of loss of the car's electronic key, but not for illegal activities – they emphasize that this is prohibited.

The scope of the attackers’ operations with such a device is large: FNN Prime Online reported that the attackers managed to steal a Land Cruiser that belonged to a member of the Japanese House of Councilors (the upper house of the country’s parliament).
