BlackSky will provide access to Indonesian space intelligence with an eye to building the country's sovereign capabilities
BlackSky has awarded contracts totaling approximately $50,000,000 to the Indonesian Ministry of Defense to provide access to commercial space intelligence, which will enable the country to develop sovereign space capabilities in the future.
BlackSky CEO Brian O'Toole notes that the new model of providing services to clients avoids significant financial costs and long periods of time to create operational intelligence capacity. Customers can now access these capabilities immediately.
As part of the contracts, the Indonesian Ministry of Defense will be able to assign tasks to BlackSky's commercial satellites and have access to commercial data. O'Tool reports that Indonesian officials are already being trained to use the software.
In addition, BlackSky, in partnership with Thales Alenia Space, will develop and deliver independent EO and SAR satellites, allowing Indonesia to have its own surveillance capabilities at a lower cost and time frame than developing its own space capabilities.
O'Toole emphasizes that this hybrid model can be used to connect to commercial satellites already in orbit and use software platforms such as theirs to obtain intelligence data. At the same time, it is possible to develop our own sovereign capabilities, taking into account the needs in specific regions.
BlackSky approached the Indonesian Ministry of Defense with a proposal to provide commercial access and create independent satellites. O'Toole notes that the proposal was accepted instantly, and the Ministry has already gained access to space intelligence in real time — just a month after signing the contract.
O'Toole predicts that with rising defense budgets and increasing dependence on space intelligence, such international deals will become increasingly popular not only for BlackSky, but also for other companies.
