After the iPhone manufacturer decided to stop producing leather accessories
Organization «People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals» (PETA) has announced the winners of its 2023 awards, praising organizations that it believes are setting an example for others on environmental issues and animal cruelty. Apple was named Company of the Year in 2023.
In a blog post on Sunday, PETA commends Apple for its efforts to eliminate leather from its product line and its goal of becoming a carbon-neutral company by 2023. «This sets a tremendous example for other large companies, and also meets consumer demand for more environmentally friendly products», — writes the organization.
According to PETA, «Apple will spare countless animals and help mitigate the effects of climate disaster». Instead, by offering accessories made from other materials, the company «enables compassionate consumers to feel good about eco-friendly products».
PETA also praises Apple's new line of Apple Watch bands and FineWoven iPhone cases, which produce fewer emissions than carbon-intensive leather production.
Although Apple shuns leather, that doesn't stop accessory makers from using the material.
