Previously, there were rumors that Notes in iOS 18 would support display more math equations and a built-in option for recording voice memos, but the update for Mail, Photos and Fitness was announced for the first time, with a report from Bloomberg's Mark Gurman.
Gurman also confirmed that Apple plans to launch a Calculator app for iPadOS 18.
Here's everything we know about app updates in iOS 18:
- Smarter Siri: iOS 18 is rumored to include new generative AI features for Siri, Spotlight Search, Commands, Apple Music, Messages, and also programs Health, Keynote, Numbers, Pages and the like. These features are expected to be powered by Apple's Large Language Model (LLM) on the device, but the company has also reportedly discussed partnerships with the likes of Google, OpenAI and Baidu.
- Home screen settings:One of the design changes for iOS 18 is likely more customization for the Home screen, including the ability to place app icons anywhere in the Home screen grid.
- Improved text messaging for Android users: Apple has announced that it will support the cross-platform RCS messaging standard in the Messages app on iPhone “later” in 2024, so it will likely be a feature of iOS 18. Compared to SMS, RCS support will improve the messaging experience between iOS and Android devices, allowing you to send photos and videos in higher resolution, support for audio messages, text input indicators, notifications reading, messaging via Wi-Fi and the like.
- Calculator Update:iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS 15 are expected to get an updated Calculator app with several new features, including a sidebar listing recent calculations, an improved interface for unit conversions, integration with the Notes app, and more. Yes, that means that Apple will finally make its Calculator app available for iPad.
- Math in Notes app: With iOS 18, Notes is expected to gain support for displaying math equations, allowing you to include more types of algebraic equations and formulas.
- Custom routes in Apple Maps:iOS 18 is expected to introduce at least two new Apple Maps features, including dedicated directions and topographic maps. Special routes let you select specific roads to travel while navigating, while topographic maps include details such as paths, contour lines, elevations, and points of interest for hiking and other recreational activities. Apple has already introduced topographic maps on Apple Watch with watchOS 10.
- Safari Browser Assistant: Another new generative AI feature potentially coming to iOS 18 is Safari Assistant, but no specific details not yet known. There are already several iPhone web browsers with artificial intelligence tools, such as Microsoft Edge and its GPT-4-based Copilot, as well as Arc Search, which can summarize web pages.
- AirPods Pro as a hearing aid:iOS 18 will reportedly include a so-called “hearing aid mode” for AirPods Pro, but it's unclear how it will differ from Apple's existing Conversation Boost feature that launched in 2021.
- Next-gen CarPlay: Apple's website says the first cars with next-gen CarPlay will arrive in 2024, so the platform could debut together with iOS 18 later this year. However, it is possible that the next generation of CarPlay will also be compatible with some versions of iOS 17.
- Freeform Scenes: iOS 18 is rumored to add a new “Scenes” option to Apple's Freeform drawing app. This feature will allow you to select specific sections or “scenes” on the canvas for easier navigation.
Apple will announce iOS 18 at WWDC on June 10 and will likely launch the update widely in September.
