The first device will be released no earlier than 2026
Apple is considering releasing its first foldable device in the next few years in the form of a 7-8-inch device that could eventually replace the 8.3-inch iPad mini. According to the South Korean publication The Elec, Apple is considering a launch date for the device between 2026 and 2027.
Apple is also actively developing an iPad mini with an OLED screen as the company remains uncertain about the foldable device. Rumors are reportedly still rife in the industry as to whether it will be a foldable iPhone or a foldable iPad. Samsung Display and LG Display have reportedly been sending samples of 7-inch and 8-inch foldable panels to Apple since last year.
Among panel manufacturers, Samsung has been more active in developing Apple's foldable panels than LG, and will likely become a major supplier of foldable panels if Apple decides to launch foldable devices in 2026.
Apple, Samsung Display and LG Display are said to have «different views» about the coating of the flexible screen, as well as the concept of hinges, which is the basis of the mechanism.
Apple is also reported to be working on a larger 20.5-inch foldable product, which is expected to launch later than the 7-8 inch device.
