Apple is considering the possibility of releasing a folding device with a diagonal of 7 to 8 inches. The product launch is expected in 2026 or 2027. It may be Apple's first foldable device, but it's unlikely to be a replacement for the 8.3-inch iPad mini as it will likely be at a different price point. Moreover, Apple is also developing OLED displays for the iPad mini.
According to industry sources from the Korean publication The Lec, Samsung Display and LG Display sent images of 6-inch and 7-inch foldable panels to Apple last year. According to them, Samsung Display is more actively developing panels for Apple's folding display than LG Display.
If a mass production decision is made, Samsung is expected to make a foldable panel on its sixth-generation OLED display line, which makes OLED displays for the iPhone.
While Apple has not confirmed the specifications of its late 7-inch and early 8-inch foldable products, Apple, Samsung Display and LG Display are reported to have different ideas regarding the glass (Ultra Thin Glass, UTG) and hinge concept that is at the heart of the product's mechanism. This is believed to be due to differences in assessment of product durability and reliability.
The industry consensus is that Apple will make changes to the iPhone in 2027. Then it will be 20 years since the release of Apple's first iPhone and 10 years since the release of the first OLED iPhone.
