During Apple's quarterly call with investors, CEO Tim Cook said, that the company is working on generative AI software capabilities that will be available to customers “later this year.” This coincides with information that iOS 18 could become the “largest” update in the history of the operating system, including thanks to AI. Cook mentioned generative AI several times, but did not elaborate.
As we look to the future, we will continue to invest in these and other technologies that will shape the future. This includes artificial intelligence, which we continue to spend a huge amount of time and effort on, and we're excited to share details of our ongoing work in this area later this year.

AI software features—from advanced photo processing to improved word processing—have been a major marketing strategy for smartphones from Google and Samsung in recent months, The Verge reports. Apple rarely announces its future steps, so this is a sign that the company has ambitious plans to integrate AI into its software platforms – iOS, iPadOS and macOS.
Let me just say that I believe there is a huge opportunity for Apple with generative AI, without going into too much detail or getting ahead of ourselves.
— Cook said at the end of the call.
