Apple softens a key App Store rule that has long been a source of irritation for developers . The company has allowed US developers to link to third-party sites to make in-app purchases.
The changes come after the US Supreme Court rejected an appeal to review a lower court decision that ordered Apple to allow developers to redirect customers to alternative payment methods. The changes only affect iOS and iPadOS apps in US stores, and developers are still required to pay a fee for in-app purchases not made through the App Store, Engadget reports.
It looks like Apple will continue to strictly control payments even under the new rules. According to the support page, developers will require Apple's approval before they can take advantage of the new rule, and app makers will only be allowed to tell users about alternative payment methods in certain ways. For example, the guidelines state that links can only be shown once in an application and only in one designated location. App developers are also prohibited from using pop-ups or mentioning external payments in their App Store description.
The company is also officially requiring developers to pay it a commission for purchases made outside the App Store. The commission is set at 12% for developers who are part of the small business program and 27% for large developers.
