80% of parents surveyed in the UK believe that smartphones are “harmful” for children and youth, and 58% support their ban.
Two months ago, the UK government published guidelines on the use of mobile phones in local schools, after a number of surveys showed that the public wholeheartedly supported such decisions.
“We would like to see a law introduced where smartphones can only be used by people over 16,” Esther Gay, the mother of 16-year-old transgender Brianna, who was brutally murdered by her peers last year, told the BBC. The killers were reportedly addicted to real-life torture videos on the dark web.
The Guardian writes that British ministers are now considering banning the sale of smartphones to persons under 16 years of age. However, no official statements have been made yet.
“We do not comment on speculation. Our commitment to making the UK the safest place for children online is unwavering, as demonstrated by our landmark Online Safety Act,” a government spokesman said.
A March Parentkind survey of 2,496 parents of school-age children in England found that 58% of respondents thought the government should ban smartphones for children under 16. In addition, more than four in five parents believe that smartphones are “harmful” for children and young people.
