AMD Fluid Motion Frames (AFMF) technology is officially released on Radeon Adrenalin driver version 24.1.1. AFMF is a driver-level frame generation technology that AMD uses for its FSR 3 upscaler that provides compatibility with thousands of DirectX11 and DirectX12 games in exchange for image quality. AMD claims that AFMF improves performance by 97% at 1080 and 103% at 1440p, but results will certainly vary from game to game.

Although FSR 3 with frame generation technology was launched back in September, the full release of the AFMF function at the driver level has only now taken place, reports Tom’s Hardware. The feature was introduced for RX 6000 and 7000 series graphics cards in October as part of the previous driver, and then for Radeon 700M series integrated graphics in the new previous driver at the beginning of the year.

AFMF is essentially FSR 3 frame generation, but without the scaling technology that comes bundled with FSR. It allows you to expect that frame generation will almost double the frame rate, but the visual quality will be lower when only AFMF is enabled. The driver notes state that frame generation is dynamically turned off during fast motion to maintain higher image quality, but the generated frames are inherently lower quality than the original ones. AMD additionally recommends using variable refresh rate technology such as FreeSync.

The advantage of AFMF is that it can work in almost all DX11 and DX12 games, although errors may occur in some cases. This is significantly different from Nvidia's DLSS 3, which only runs on RTX 40 series GPUs and only on games that specifically support DLSS 3. Compatibility tends to be the biggest benefit of AMD performance technologies, as FSR runs on multiple generations of AMD GPUs , Nvidia and Intel, while AFMF is limited to only AMD GPUs, and only three different families.
