It will be installed on a promising manned spacecraft
The Scientific Research Institute of Mechanical Engineering (NIIMash, part of Roscosmos) is testing a new rocket engine that runs on hydrogen peroxide. It will be used for advanced manned spacecraft. Since 2020, the institute has been engaged in the manufacture and testing of control rocket engines, as well as testing descent systems, the working fluid of which is 85% hydrogen peroxide.
The new peroxide rocket engine is intended for use in the reentry vehicle of a promising manned spacecraft. For NIIMash peroxide — This is a completely new type of fuel, so work is carried out with special precautions: there are serious requirements for cleanliness, technological devices and tools. The new engine was developed by RSC «Energia», and the electrohydraulic valve, which is part of it, was created by specialists from the Research Institute.
The Ural enterprise produces parts and assembly units, and also assembles and tests the peroxide engines themselves. The first engines of this type successfully passed design tests in May 2023, and now development tests are being carried out and at the same time engines are being manufactured to complete the firing model. Tests of the firing model are planned to be carried out at NIIMash in the near future.
