It will be sold at auction
At the upcoming Mecum auction in mid-May, a truly rare 1965 Shelby Cobra Dragonsnake sports car will be up for auction. Organizers expect to earn from $1.5 to $1.7 million for this lot – an amount more than 150 times the original cost of the car.
Shelby American built only five factory Cobra Dragonsnake dragsters, specifically designed for NHRA straight-line competition. Four of them were equipped with a 4.7-liter V8, while the example being auctioned received a unique engine with four Weber carburetors at the insistence of the first owner, racer Don Reimer.
In addition to its special engine, this Dragonsnake featured a beefed-up transmission and retuned suspension with Koni shock absorbers, as well as a yellow paint job to match the color of the Ford Thunderbird used to transport it. The initial cost of the sports car was $9000.
The Mecum auction house calls the Shelby Cobra Dragonsnake up for auction one of the most carefully and authentically restored examples of this model. As evidence, there are numerous awards received by this rarity at various elite classics competitions.
