The YouTube team has launched a new experiment that aims to combat the spread of fakes and disinformation on the platform.
As part of the experiment, YouTube will allow adding notes to public videos. It seems that this feature is very similar to Community Notes in X (Twitter). Essentially, it allows viewers to add context to a particular claim in a video so that other viewers can better understand the facts being presented in the video. If a presenter makes a mistake in a video or deliberately spreads false information, annotations can be used to point out the inaccuracy.
The feature is currently being tested in the US for a “limited number of contributors” who speak English. To supplement the information in a video, the user must submit an annotation related to the claim for a particular video. This annotation will be passed on to a third-party evaluator. These evaluators will then decide whether the annotation should be made public.
If a note is made public, other viewers can rate it in one of three ways: “helpful,” “somewhat helpful,” or “not helpful.” They will also be able to provide their own context and sources as to why they assigned the rating they did. In the future, the algorithm will decide which notes to publish. This algorithm is adaptive, so if a note is rated as “useless” for a while, but then many people start rating it as “useful” due to new information, the algorithm will respond appropriately.
If the experiment is deemed successful, the general public should start seeing notes on some videos “in the coming weeks and months.”
