Xreal, formerly called Nreal, showed new glasses at CES 2024 augmented reality called Xreal Air 2 Ultra. The new product offers a number of characteristics that will allow it to compete with Apple Vision Pro, but at the same time the price is stated to be several times lower.
Thus, Xreal Air 2 Ultra is characterized by 6DoF (six degrees of freedom) spatial tracking and hand tracking. In addition, the device provides a wide field of view (52 degrees) and a resolution of 42 pixels per degree. The design is made of titanium and weighs 80g. The company says these characteristics make the $699 Air 2 Ultra an attractive alternative to the $3,499 Vision Pro.

Unlike standalone mixed reality headsets, the Air 2 series glasses require the use of an external computing device such as a smartphone, computer or Xreal Beam, which connects via USB-C. While the earlier Air 2 Pro and Air 2 were positioned more as wearables with a personal display, the Air 2 Ultra places emphasis on its 6DOF spatial computing capabilities. In this way, virtual objects can be compared with the real world.
This is powered by dual 3D environmental sensors on the front, as well as processors on the Samsung Galaxy S23 or S22, iPhone 15, or any Mac or Windows computer that can run Xreal Nebula. The company currently has no plans to support more smartphones, but is working on a new dedicated compute unit for the Air 2 Ultra.
The Air 2 Ultra features three levels of electrochrome dimming for greater immersion (without the need for a physical screen), as well as directional audio technology for enhanced privacy and contains dual microphones for voice interaction. The glasses use Sony micro OLED panels with 1080p resolution per eye, refresh rates up to 120Hz (90Hz in 3D mode) and brightness up to 500 nits (250 nits in 3D mode). Xreal clarified that the glasses can display a virtual 2D screen “up to 154 inches away from a distance of 13 feet” and that they are “TÜV Rheinland certified for Color Accuracy, Eye Comfort, Low Blue Light and Flicker Free.”

The Xreal Air 2 Ultra glasses are available for pre-order now for $699, with actual shipments beginning in March. For now they are more focused on developers. The upcoming Unity-based NRSDK 2.2 will begin rolling out with device shipments. Only after this will developers be able to begin to take advantage of the new product in their applications.
