June builds of Windows 11 Insider suffer from increased CPU usage, and solutions to this no problem yet. Participants in the insider program suspect Microsoft Cross Device Service, a program for interaction between a smartphone and a PC, is responsible for this. Microsoft is aware of the problem, but has not fixed it for over a week.
This issue was first reported on June 5, 2024 on the Microsoft forums. The increased CPU load disappears if you disable the Microsoft Cross Device Service. Unfortunately for Windows 11 Insiders who would like to use the cross-device file sharing service, Microsoft has not yet released a fix. Microsoft engineer Jennifer Gee responded to one of them: “Thank you for your patience, we have identified the cause and are working on a fix” – but it is not there yet.
It is speculated that this error is due to the new and improved Device Interoperability Service features in Windows 11. This allows the PC to sync more easily with the phone for file sharing etc. Phone Link support has been identified as the most likely cause, but older changes added to Cross Device Service in earlier builds may also be responsible.
Users once again note that Microsoft may be moving “somewhere in the wrong direction.” The system uses up to 10% of the processor power when idle, the Recall function is a security concern. Microsoft is forced to take more steps back with its own innovations in Windows 11. At least there is hope that the new resource hog will be fixed before release.
