What does the Russian ESP? system consist of and how is it produced? “Behind the wheel” published a large report from production in Kostroma

ESP is a much more complex system than ABS

Maxim Kadakov, editor-in-chief of the publication «Behind the Wheel», visited the plant of the company «Itelma» in Kostroma and talked about what the Russian ESP system (aka ESC) is.

The ESP system is very different from ABS: it has a larger body, a larger (more powerful) electric motor, more valves (intake and exhaust), and a pressure/temperature sensor.

Before launching the domestic ESP system into production, a large number of tests were carried out – both summer and winter. They included avoiding an obstacle (“moose” test), moving in an arc, moving in a straight line, accelerating uphill with different coefficients of adhesion under the left and right wheels, etc. And only after all the tests were carried out and the corresponding calibrations were performed, the Russian ESP was put into production. By that time, about 200 thousand ABS blocks had already been assembled at the same plant.

The assembly process uses 5-axis machines and imported robots (for example, Mitsubishi Electric). All components are now imported, but by the end of 2026 localization should exceed 75%.

Lada Vesta with Russian ESP will appear in mid-2024, Lada Aura and Lada Iskra will be equipped with domestic ESP from the very beginning, as will all subsequent AvtoVAZ models (for example, the future crossover). Negotiations on the installation of Russian ABS are ongoing with GAZ Group, Moskvich and the Tula Haval plant.
