WaveAerospace from Connecticut has announced “the world’s fastest multi-rotor UAV” . But essentially this is a new class of unmanned aerial vehicles, which is a quadcopter with a jet turbine inside, capable of reaching breakneck speeds and operating in any weather.
Huntress II Turbojet is a large drone, measuring 4 m diagonally from rotor to rotor. It itself weighs about 50 kg depending on the amount of aviation fuel, and its maximum take-off weight is 165 kg, so it is capable of carrying a relatively large payload, in five avionics bays or in four external containers.
The copter must be ready to quickly deploy and complete missions in less than 90 seconds, whether launched from land, sea, or dropped from an aircraft at altitudes up to 6,000 m. The endurance is up to two hours, and operators can view video in real time, controlling the device at a distance of up to 30 km. After it has taken off into the air, it is possible to hover and fly it like a quadcopter, or launch a jet turbine, reports NewAtlas.
WaveAerospace does not specify the power of the turbojet engine, but says it will easily reach Mach 0.4 (about 480 km/h). The top speed is electronically limited, and the company says it will eventually consider relaxing this limit to allow it to go much faster.
The Huntress II Turbojet can fly in almost all weather conditions, up to force 10 storms with wind speeds of up to 117 km/h and temperatures ranging from -34 to 54 °C. WaveAerospace, in addition to military applications, also offers it for search and rescue, critical logistics, high-speed reconnaissance, etc.
