Average age exceeded 12 years
The average age of cars in Russia has reached 12.4 years, which is almost 1.5 years more than in 2022, as follows from the statement of the head of the Gruzdev-Analyze company, Alexander Gruzdev.
Old cars can become a serious problem in terms of accident rates, according to Igor Morzharetto, a member of the public council of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Russian Federation: “If in 2014 the average return of a passenger car was 10.8 years, now it may already be more than 15. The number of accidents due to faulty cars have long been at the level of 2–3% of the total number of accidents, so the age of the cars has not yet affected the accident rate: car owners still try to look after their cars and repair them in a timely manner. But in the future, the aging of the vehicle fleet may become a serious problem in terms of accident rates.”
According to Gruzdev-Analyze, the number of actively used vehicles in Russia in 2022 decreased by 822 thousand units, and in 2023 – by 395 thousand units. In Russia, the standard service life of a car is 10 years. But most often, manufacturers themselves set the operating standard, for example, for Hyundai and Kia it is six years.
The fact that the Russian vehicle fleet is aging is confirmed by the large network of car service centers Fit Service. According to their data, the average age of a car coming for service has increased from 11.2 to 12.4 years since last year.
The older the cars in the fleet, the more repairs are carried out. Now we see that the client is becoming more thrifty and strives to extend the life of his car, because he does not know what he can replace the car with tomorrow
