The Russian airliner MC-21 took the first step towards a certification flight program. During flight testing, it made its first automatic landing under ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organization) Category IIIA.

Within this category, landing is allowed with a visual range on the runway of at least 200 meters and a decision altitude of at least 30 meters, while the aircraft itself must provide automatic descent and pre-landing alignment.

Despite the fact that the MC-21-300 was equipped with American engines and foreign systems, the control system and software algorithms that ensure automatic landing were developed in Russia.
