This is open and universal software
The Nvidia CUDA architecture has long been a kind of standard in its segment, which, on the one hand, is good, but on the other hand — makes Nvidia an even greater monopolist. According to Reuters, a coalition of large IT companies UXL Foundation, which includes Google, Intel, Samsung and Qualcomm and others, is going to create an alternative to CUDA. More precisely, not so much to create as to promote, since this very alternative already exists.
Intel oneAPI is used as a basis. It is a unified programming model specifically designed for heterogeneous computing. It has been on the market for several years. Intel oneAPI is ahead of CUDA in its openness and provides greater mobility among developers when switching between different architectures. In addition, oneAPI is open source.
UXL plans to focus its resources on solving the most pressing computing problems, such as emerging artificial intelligence and high-performance computing applications. These early plans are consistent with the organization's long-term goal — attract a critical mass of developers to your platform.
