Governor of the Irkutsk region Igor Kobzev said that the city of Baikalsk could be supplied with energy from geothermal sources in the future.

In his Telegram channel, Kobzev reported that today Rosnedra plans to issue the first license to study the topic of geothermal energy in the region.

With colleagues from the Federal Agency for Subsoil Use, we discussed not only the current state of the subsoil, but also the prospects for the development of thermal power engineering in the region and the production of geothermal energy. A new concept for us. This is heat produced in the depths of the earth, which can be used for cooling and heating, as well as generating clean electricity. Preliminarily today, Rosnedra plans to issue the first license to study this topic. We are talking about the territory that is located in the southern part of the Irkutsk region – in the area of Baikalsk, a city which, on behalf of the President, should become the first eco-city in Russia. The day before, this topic was discussed with the head of the Federal Agency for Subsoil Use, Evgeny Ignatievich Petrov

There are no technical details yet, but previously, in accordance with the instructions of the President of the Russian Federation, a program for the socio-economic development of Baikalsk until 2040 was approved. Among other things, it is planned to turn Baikalsk into the first eco-city in Russia and the center of eco-tourism in the country.
