The first AI law: the EU ratified an agreement on rules that will “protect” people from new technology

by alex

Two key groups of EU lawmakers on Tuesday approved an interim agreement on the future of artificial intelligence law, with a full vote in Parliament scheduled for April.

New legislation would set guardrails for artificial intelligence, which is used in industries ranging from banking and law enforcement to autos, electronics products and airlines.

In particular, basic models or generative artificial intelligence created by OpenAI with the support of Microsoft will be subject to regulation. At the same time, most AI programs are defined in the law as “low-risk technologies,” meaning they are not covered by the law.

EU countries backed the rules in early February after France won concessions to ease administrative burdens on “high-risk AI systems” and better protect trade secrets.

At the same time, according to Reuters, big tech is still worried because some of the rules appear to be “fuzzy and general.”
