New data on the top-grossing mobile games of 2023 reveals why corporations are eager to launch their own smaller titles.
Companies like Tencent make just under $5 billion a year from mobile games alone, while Honor of Kings and PUBG Mobile each made $1 billion last year. Hoyoverse, the team behind Genshin Impact and Honkai: Star Rail, earned $1.71 billion in 2023 from the mobile versions of those two games alone.
To try to gain their own audience on mobile devices, Sony is set to make MMO Horizon for smartphones with the help of NCSOFT, with which it recently announced a “strategic partnership.” There have already been a few duds like Run Sackboy Run and Ultimate Sackboy, but with the acquisition of Neon Koi (formally Savage Game Studios) and the signing of Apple Arcade executives, Sony is looking to get serious about mobile gaming.
