The first wedding ceremony took place in Russia with marriage registration using biometrics, without the need to present passports. The event took place on January 13 as part of the exhibition-forum «Russia», young teachers from the Voronezh region got married — Roman and Daria Babayev. The marriage was registered without the use of identity documents, only with the help of biometrics, which the newlyweds previously submitted at a VTB Bank branch. To confirm their identity during the wedding ceremony, they only had to look into the tablet's camera.

General Director of the Center for Biometric Technologies (CBT) Vladislav Povolotsky and Governor of the Voronezh Region Alexander Gusev took part in organizing and holding the celebration. According to Povolotsky, in the near future a full-fledged marriage registration service using biometrics may well be launched in Russia, the main thing is – collect and register confirmed biometric data in the CBT in advance.

Confirmed biometrics can be issued at bank branches: there an employee will take a photo of the client who has expressed a desire to submit biometrics, and will also record his voice. This data is transferred for storage to the state Unified Biometric System. It has been operating since 2018, where you can upload a photo of your face and a voice recording to remotely confirm your identity and receive a number of services that were previously provided only with a passport.
