The first private supersonic aircraft took to the skies in two decades ago Concorde was withdrawn from service. On March 22, the Boom XB-1 supersonic demonstrator completed its maiden flight at Mojave Air and Space Port, California.
“Today the XB-1 flew into the same hallowed airspace where the Bell X-1 first broke the sound barrier in 1947,” said Blake Scholl, Founder and CEO director of Boom Supersonic. “I have been looking forward to this flight since Boom's founding in 2014, and it marks a major milestone in our journey to bring supersonic travel to passengers around the world.”
The first flight, in essence, was to show that the aircraft was capable of flying and maintaining structural integrity. Test pilot Bill “Doc” Shoemaker was at the controls of the XB-1 demonstrator. He was followed by test pilot Tristan “Geppetto” Brandenburg in a supersonic T-38 aircraft. His goal was to observe the flight and confirm altitude and speed.
The XB-1 aircraft has a length of 19 m, a wingspan of 6 m and 3 GE J85-15 engines, which provide a thrust of about 5.6 tons. During the first flight, the aircraft rose to a height of 2170 m and reached speed up to 440 km/h.

These are not at all the indicators that are expected from a supersonic aircraft. However, Boom says that once the aerodynamic characteristics and flight capability of the XB-1 are confirmed, the aircraft will be able to increase its speed, and in the next tests it is already planned to exceed the speed of Mach 1 – more than 1 thousand km/h.
The XB-1 features several innovations. These include an augmented reality system, digitally optimized aerodynamics, carbon composite construction and supersonic air intakes that slow incoming air to subsonic speeds. This allows the aircraft to use conventional jet engines.
The goal of the XB-1 is to help develop technology that will be used in Overture's supersonic jet, which is designed to carry up to 80 passengers at Mach 1.7.
