A South Korean woman says she met “Musk” through Instagram, where he allegedly selectively communicates with fans.
“On July 17 last year, Musk added me as a friend on Instagram. Although I became a big fan of his after reading the biography, I initially doubted whether it was real,” the woman told Korean broadcaster KBS (via Business Insider).
Subsequently, the fake Elon began to tell her about working at Tesla and even sent her photos from the workplace and an ID, so the woman no longer doubted that she was lucky to become the chosen one.
“Musk talked about his children and taking a helicopter to work for Tesla or Space X,” she told KBS.
The scammer also told her the details of “his” meeting with South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol, which took place in April 2023. There he allegedly agreed to build Tesla factories in Seoul and Jeju.
It’s interesting that the woman managed to talk to the fake Musk via video – most likely the scammer used a deepfake.
“Musk even said during the video call: “I love you, you know it?,” the woman adds.
In the end, the fake Musk asked for 70 million Korean won, or $50,000, to be transferred to his bank account (which supposedly belonged to one of his Korean employees) – and promised to make her rich by investing the money “in the right place.”
In fact, “love fraud” is a fairly common trend. In the United States alone, in 2022, fake lovers defrauded their victims of $1.3 billion. As for Musk’s clones, this is not the first time they have become known to the public – a Chinese doppelgänger of the billionaire named Yilong Ma became popular on TikTok and even attracted the attention of the real Elon.
