This year, iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus will retain LPTS panels
Next year, iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Plus may feature low-power ProMotion OLED displays. Yes, for the first time, ProMotion technology, which is currently used in Pro models, will be available on standard iPhone models. The Elec writes about this with reference to industry representatives.
The current iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus use low-temperature polycrystalline silicon (LTPS) panels, while Apple's iPhone 15 Pro models use more advanced low-temperature polycrystalline oxide (LPTO) panels. LPTO panels support ProMotion, allowing display refresh rates up to 120Hz for smoother scrolling and video playback when needed.
ProMotion also lowers the display's refresh rate to a more power-efficient 1Hz, so iPhone 15 Pro screens have an always-on display feature, allowing you to show the clock, widgets, notifications and lock screen wallpapers even when the device is locked.< /p>
Apple is expected to retain the use of less advanced LPTS panels in this year's iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus to maintain the difference between the standard and Pro models.
According to The Elec, Chinese supplier BOE is hoping to supply Apple with LPTO panels for the iPhone 17 series, but questions still remain about whether it can achieve the required production capacity while maintaining Apple's quality control standards.< /p>
If BOE cannot meet these requirements, Apple will likely turn to other suppliers such as Samsung and LG Display for LPTO panels and rely on BOE for LPTS-based OLED panels for older models iPhone and iPhone SE4.
