A starter set of new artificial intelligence features (read: new Siri) that Apple plans to add no reliance on cloud servers at all in iOS 18, Mark Gurman reports in the latest Power On digest for Bloomberg.
iOS 18: bet on local AI
Apple will announce iOS 18 along with other new versions of the OS at the upcoming WWDC24 presentation on June 10. A significant part of this large presentation will be the first artificial intelligence functions, which, according to Mark Gurman, will work locally on the device without the involvement of remote servers. This means that the cloud data processing component has been “cut out” from the large language model that will power Apple’s AI services. More secure, local processing of sensitive personal information should be a key differentiator for Apple's AI, which has consistently placed a distinct emphasis on privacy and security on iPhone and other products.
iOS 18 is rumored to bring new generative AI features to the Spotlight search tool on iPhone. Also, Siri, Safari, Shortcuts, Apple Music, Messages, Health, Numbers, Pages, Keynote and other applications will be upgraded with new AI functions. Previously, Gurman reported that Siri would become smarter and learn to answer more complex questions, and auto-completion of sentences would appear in Messages. Right now, all indications are that Apple isn't going to directly respond to ChatGPT in iOS 18, but we can't completely rule out a built-in chatbot powered by Gemini or something else.
Apple will also likely offer a number of cloud-based AI features that will run on Google Gemini or other third-party vendor models. Apple's potential partners in the field of generative AI include Google, OpenAI and even China's Baidu. According to preliminary reports, Apple has been in negotiations with all of the above-mentioned companies. In addition, prominent Apple supply chain analysts such as Ming-Chi Kuo and Jeff Pu have reported on the iPhone developer's large purchases of specialized AI servers. Therefore, in the future, Apple may well fully join the race of generative artificial intelligence.
