In one school year, $23 million worth of laptops and iPads were stolen or lost in Chicago schools alone. In one case, a brother and sister “lost” 9-10 devices

Nobody did anything about this problem

It's no secret that in the United States many schools purchase various laptops and tablets for students, and these are often Apple products. It turned out that all this has a downside in the form of losses of millions of dollars.

In Chicago alone, more than 70,000 laptops and iPads have reportedly been stolen or lost in just one school year (the 2021-2022 school year). The total loss is about $23 million.

To put things into perspective, between 2020 and 2023, Chicago Public Schools spent $308 million on 311,000 laptops.

At the same time, it seems that no one has dealt with the problem before, and in certain cases it reaches the point of absurdity. For example, the investigation revealed a case where two students — it was brother and sister — 9-10 devices were reported lost, and there is no record that the family of these children was even spoken to.
