Last week, Musk sued OpenAI, accusing him of abandoning original mission to “develop AI for the benefit of humanity” in favor of making money.
The billionaire also criticized his competitors (Musk has his own AI company xAI) for refusing to publish open source code for developments – and in return announced the open source code for his chat bot Grok.
“This week xAI will open source Grok,” Musk wrote in a note on X.
This move will allow the public to experiment with the code behind xAI technology. Meta, for example, has open sourced its LLaMa 2, and Google is offering third-party access to the code for an AI model called Gemma.
Reuters, meanwhile, notes that while open source technology can speed up innovation, it could be used by terrorists to create chemical weapons or even develop conscious superintelligence beyond human control.
Musk said last year that he wanted to create a “third party” that could monitor firms developing artificial intelligence. Looking for an alternative to OpenAI and Google, the billionaire launched xAI to create “artificial intelligence that seeks the truth.” In December, the startup released the Grok chatbot for Premium+ subscribers X.
Musk previously stated on Lex Friedman's podcast:

“The word “open” in OpenAI means open source, and it was created as an open source non-profit organization. And now it is closed for maximum profit.”
OpenAI, meanwhile, responded to Musk’s lawsuit by publishing internal correspondence in which the billionaire (he was a co-founder of OpenAI) supported the creation of a commercial organization. Elon also proposed a merger with Tesla for the company, sought full control and wanted to get the position of CEO. OpenAI says that after Musk's proposal was rejected, he left the project and did not provide the promised funding of almost $1 billion – the startup subsequently “partnered” with Microsoft and released ChatGPT.
