Samsung showed at GTC 2024 its GDDR7 graphics memory, which it announced some time ago.
Samsung GDDR7 chips have a capacity of 2 GB and an operating voltage of only 1.1 V. Samsung says that relative to GDDR6, energy efficiency is increased by 20%, and the memory will heat up significantly less.
The maximum effective frequency of current Samsung chips — 32 GHz. Previously, the company talked about chips with a frequency of 37 GHz, but they will obviously have to wait. Moreover, we recently heard that GeForce RTX 50 video cards will receive GDDR7 memory with a frequency of only 28 GHz, and Samsung itself indirectly confirms this, noting that its current memory can be configured to operate at exactly 28 GHz to increase profitability and overall performance per cost in the first stage of distribution of new memory. Simply put, the reduced frequency will allow Samsung to reject fewer chips, and video card manufacturers — save.
According to current leaks and rumors, GDDR7 will be received at least by GeForce RTX 5090 and RTX 5080 video cards, but more affordable adapters of the upcoming line may also be received. There is no such data yet about Radeon RX 8000 models.
