The showrunners claim that they do not want to go beyond the original duology of games, but they are already planning to make the third season large-scale
The second season of HBO's The Last of Us will feature seven episodes, up from nine in the original season. At the same time, showrunners Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann claim that the potential third season will be “significantly larger than the first two,” and also do not rule out the possibility of a fourth season.
The creators previously said that they did not want to go beyond the original series of games and noted that The Last of Us Part 2 is a very rich source material.
The second season of the show will premiere in 2025.
