Troubles associated with the 16-pin 12VHPWR power connector for video cards continue. The owner of an NVIDIA RTX 4090 shared a horror story on the Korean forum Quasar Zone about how a melted connector “dragged” not only the video card, but also the power supply into the grave.
More often than not, 12VHPWR melted on either the video card or the power supply, but this time both devices were affected. The photos show the MSI GeForce RTX 4090 Suprim X 24G video card, which is powered by an FSP Hydro power supply. Surprisingly, the RTX 4090 wasn't even running at full speed: the user limited the power to 75%.
Sometimes RTX 4090 owners play with different power limits to maximize efficiency or to reduce the risk of melting the 16-pin power connector. However, this, apparently, is not a panacea.
Despite the subsequent introduction by the PCI-SIG organization of a new version of the connector, 12V-2×6 Many NVIDIA RTX 4090 video cards from previous batches still work for users and sometimes fail, even two years after release. Even third-party connection cables do not help – Cablemod, one of the most popular manufacturers in this direction, had to recall their products due to the danger.
