Does it make sense to overpay for a gaming CPU and save on a video card? Comparison of Ryzen 5 7600/RTX 4070 Ti with Ryzen 7 7800X3D/RTX 4070 shows interesting results

It all depends on the game and resolution

Game processor — a concept that until recently was actually «dead». But with the release of the Ryzen X3D with its additional cache memory, it again became correct to talk about gaming CPUs. The authors of Hardware Unboxed decided to check whether it is worth overpaying for such a processor if it will force you to save on a video card.

Two pairs were taken for the experiment: Ryzen 5 7600 with GeForce RTX 4070 Ti, as well as Ryzen 7 7800X3D with RTX 4070. Both pairs cost approximately the same in total, which allows us to make a comparison as correct and useful as possible.

To begin with, it’s worth saying that on average the RTX 4070 Ti is about 20% faster than the RTX 4070, but it all depends on the game and resolution. The authors of the test compared in all resolutions, and the only minus of the review is that there were few games (only eight).

Имеет ли смысл переплатить за игровой CPU и сэкономить на видеокарте? Сравнение Ryzen 5 7600/RTX 4070 Ti с Ryzen 7 7800X3D/RTX 4070 показывает интересные результаты

As you can see, in general, the answer to the question cannot be unambiguous. Despite the fairly large difference in performance between the RTX 4070 and the RTX 4070 Ti, in some games (four out of eight), at least in Full HD, it will be faster when paired with the younger card, but the gaming Ryzen 7 7800X3D. Moreover, in Fortnite the advantage is simply huge. And even in 2K there are games (Fortnite and Marvel's Spider-Man Remastered), where the combination with the RTX 4070 is faster.

When moving to 4K, everything falls into place: the load on the GPU increases, and the RTX 4070 can no longer outpace its older sister, even with the help of a gaming processor.

Thus, on average, of course, buying a more powerful video card is still more justified. However, there are games where the gaming processor outweighs, sometimes very noticeably, and sometimes even in 2K resolution.
