Hundreds of motors had already been assembled at the time of announcement
AvtoVAZ restarted production of the 1.8-liter engine, which was announced a week ago under the name 1.8 EVO. The video published by the plant says that AvtoVAZ had assembled hundreds of such engines at the time of the announcement.
The 1.8 EVO engine assembly line consists of 17 stations, each of which has automatic process control. It takes about 3 hours to assemble one motor, with a new motor coming off the assembly line every 3.5 minutes.
«The line uses error protection techniques throughout the line: in the event of an operation being performed incorrectly, any operations being missed, or a discrepancy occurring – the assembly process of a particular motor is blocked. All impact wrenches are set to a specific torque, and the information is stored on the factory server. The impact wrenches are also set to coordinates so that the tightening pattern is followed. Robots are used in sealant application operations. There are three classes of pistons and three classes of main and connecting rod bearings. Information about the dimensions of pistons and liners is automatically applied to the cylinder block in the form of a QR code, and is automatically downloaded at the assembly line. When installing liners, the operator just needs to pick up and install the part indicated by the automation. During assembly, several assembly quality control operations are provided; for example, the automation rotates the crankshaft, assessing the ease of rotation. The camshafts in the cylinder head are also rotated, and then the engine assembly. The final quality control involves cold tests: the motor is cranked at various speeds, and the stand reads more than 160 parameters. Before this, the tightness of the lubrication and cooling lines is assessed, for which air is pumped into the systems.
