Perhaps sometime in the future Apple will create a special processor for these tasks
Apple may not bother developing its own dedicated processor for cloud servers. Or at least such a CPU will not come out soon, since Apple will use regular consumer SoCs.
Foxconn has reportedly already begun producing servers for Apple based on the M2 Ultra SoC, and will begin assembling servers based on the M4 at the end of next year.
Recall that despite the fact that Apple introduced the M4 SoC yesterday, the M2 Ultra remains Apple's most powerful platform. It was unveiled last summer, and it's unclear when the M3 Ultra will come out, if at all.
But why then, after the monstrous M2 Ultra, will the Cupertino giant switch to the much less productive M4? The point is that Apple creates servers to work with AI, and the M4 has an NPU unit even a little more powerful than M2 Ultra: 38 TOPS vs 31.6 TOPS. At the same time, the M4 is much cheaper to produce and consumes much less energy. And right now, apparently, Apple simply doesn’t have enough new platforms.
