Games with AI content on Steam: prohibited cannot be allowed
Valve is gradually opening up Steam to games that use AI-generated content, after initially refusing to accommodate some developers whose games contained assets generated using neural networks. But she later clarified that she is not at all against games that use AI technology, as long as the rules are followed. After months of studying this issue and discussing it with AI tool developers and game creators, Gabe Newell's company is changing the approach to such games.
A new approach to releasing games on Steam using AI
First, Valve is updating the survey that developers take when submitting games for review on Steam – it now includes a separate section for AI disclosures. In it, authors must describe how these technologies are used to develop the game, and which of two general categories it belongs to:
- Pre-generated content is any type of content (graphics, code, sound, etc.) generated by AI during development (before release). Developers agree (in accordance with the Steam Distribution Agreement) not to use content that is illegal or infringes the copyrights of others. Also, marketing materials must be relevant to the content of the game. Valve will verify compliance with these requirements and will additionally evaluate non-AI generated content.
- Real-time generated content is any type of content created by AI after the game's release. In addition to the rules that apply to pre-generated content, there is another requirement for this category: in the survey, developers must describe the safeguards implemented in the game to ensure that the artificial intelligence does not generate illegal content.
Valve will use this data when reviewing the game before release and will flag such games – some of the information about the use of AI for transparency and information will be displayed directly on the game page on Steam.
Secondly, Steam is rolling out a system that will allow players to report illegal content in real-time inside generative AI games. If necessary, players will be able to report directly through the Steam overlay
The only exception is adult-only sexual content generated by artificial intelligence after launch. Valve says that it is not ready to release such games on Steam, but does not rule out such a possibility in the future if the situation changes.
