Previously, EU users were blocked from accessing the service even through VPN
Meta*-owned Threads, considered by many to be the main competitor to X/Twitter, has become available in the European Union. This was announced by the company's CEO Mark Zuckerberg.
Zuckerberg wrote on his blog:
Today we are opening Threads to more countries in Europe.
The service debuted in July 2023 in the US and in more than 100 countries around the world, including the UK. But until now, Threads was not available to the 448 million people living in the European Union. Moreover, the company even blocked EU users from accessing the service via VPN.
At launch, users in the region will be able to view social media posts without having to create a profile. However, you will still need an Instagram account** to post content or interact with it in any way.
