Tumblr and WordPress, following Reddit, will sell user data to train artificial intelligence

Automattic, which owns Tumblr and WordPress, is in talks with Midjourney and OpenAI to sell data from user posts to train artificial intelligence systems.

A report from 404 Media, which cited an anonymous source, said deals were “imminent.”

Automattic is due to launch a new setting soon that will “allow users to opt out of sharing data with third parties, including AI companies.” However, according to internal communications, the company has compiled a dump that contains “all public Tumblr content posted by users between 2014 and 2023” and, as The Verge suggests, erroneously, all content added to blogs as non-public.

OpenAI and Midjourney have not yet commented on the agreement, and Automattic published a report on Tuesday entitled “Protecting User Choice,” which hints at a partnership with unnamed artificial intelligence companies.

“We now block major AI platform scanners, including those from major tech companies, by default, and update the lists as new ones are launched,” the report said. “We will only share public content posted on WordPress.com and Tumblr from users and sites that have not changed their settings.”

The company further notes that it is already “working with some artificial intelligence companies whose plans are in the best interests of the community.”

As you know, several large companies have already entered into agreements with AI developers to provide training data: Reddit, for example, has an annual agreement with Google for $60 million, and Shutterstock has an agreement with OpenAI.
